Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cashville?
Cashville is a nickname for Nashville, Tenn. At present, the name is used most widely in hip-hop circles — Young Buck’s 2004 major label debut was titled, Straight Outta Cashville — but it did not originate with the city’s rap community. According to anecdotal evidence, the name originated with Johnny Cash, as in Johnny Cash-ville. The first national reference to the city as Cashville likely occurred in a story titled, “The Nashville Sound,” which appeared in the Nov. 27, 1964 issue of Time magazine. In the early ’70s, James Brown was probably the first person to use the name Cashville on a record — a live version of “Funky Side of Town” — when he gave a shout out to Cash as “Mr. Nashville, Johnny Cashville.” On her 2001 eponymous EP, Baby Stout rapped, “Nashville, Cashville, Johnny Cashville.” Count Bass D had the first major-label rap release to reference Cashville when he used the nickname in both the lyrics and the credits of his debut album, 1995’s Pre-Life Crisis. From the beginning, the name Cashville has represented the other side of Music City, from those like Cash, who rebelled against the country music establishment, to the city's lesser-publicized, yet equally significant artists working in other musical genres.

What is the raison d'être for CASHVILLE411?
Long frustrated with the lack of coverage for all the great non-country music coming out of Nashville, Publisher/Editor Daryl Sanders wanted to launch an internet portal to focus on the important rock, rap, R&B, jazz, blues, Americana, ambient, and world music originating from Music City. CASHVILLE411 is the result.
